Summer Maintenance Tips

While summer brings the warmer weather which can mean trips to the beach and camping, it can also mean wear and tear on your Chevrolet. Before you depart on your next long distance road trip, here's what you need to do to beat the extreme heat and make sure your vehicle is ready to last for years to come.

Check Your Battery

Summer's high temperatures can wreak havoc on your car's battery and leave it on the fast track to the junkyard. Additionally, vibration can also lead to a weakened battery. While it is next to impossible to protect the vehicle from the heat - although always parking in the shade or a garage is a great place to start - you can make sure that the battery is securely mounted to make sure that it isn't vibrating more than it should. If your battery is more than three years old, it's a good idea to take it to a dealership to have it inspected so you don't become stranded.

Be Ready for a Breakdown

No one wants to get stranded in the cold winter months, but the oppressive heat of the summer isn't much better. Make sure your car is equipped with an emergency kit with practical items in it like jumper cables, a flashlight, water bottles and snacks.

Check Your Tire Inflation

Driving on tires that aren't properly inflated can lead to a dangerous blowout - particularly when the hot sun is causing the roast to be extremely hot. Make sure to check your vehicle's tire pressure at least once a month and do it before a drive, not after, to get an accurate number.

Check Your Fluids

Your Chevy's coolant or antifreeze serves as a coolant for your engine, and moves heat away from vital components under your hood. If your coolant is too low or contaminated, then the benefit of cooling is lost, which can lead to the engine overheating. When checking fluids be sure to check the motor oil, power steering, brake fluid and transmission fluid. Lastly, before replacing any fluids be sure to check your owner's manual to learn what type of coolant or fluid is best to use in your vehicle.
